Interesting and Fun Facts About the Wolf
To be compared to a Wolf is actually a good thing to the Native American Indians. Wolves were admired by the Native American Indians and were considered to be the highest spiritual teacher. The Native American Indians admired how these animals would hunt and defend their family, just like the Natives would for their family and tribe. The Wolf is considered to be the largest of the Canine Family, which consists of foxes, coyotes, jackals and the domestic dog.
They are very loyal and social animals. They are known to mate for life and live in packs. There are usually 4 – 6 members in a pack. The pack consist of an adult male called the “Alpha Male” and an adult female called the “Alpha Female”. The rest of the pack is composed of the couples offspring. Young wolves leave their pack to join other packs or start one of their own after 2 or 3 years, just as many of us would leave our parents home to began our journey through adulthood.
Gray Wolves are the most common but don’t let the name fool you. Not only are they gray in color, they are also seen in black or white. They usually live from 4 – 6 years but have been known to live more than 10. Looking at a Gray Wolf is much like looking at a German Shepard. Maybe it’s because they are closely related. It is believed that Wolves are the direct ancestors of domestic dogs. Their communication skills are very common. Ears pulled closely back with its teeth being displayed in a snare is one of the most important body expressions. This facial and body expression is a clear sign of aggression and one you should be cautious of with both canines.
They also communicate through sounds. Wolves bark, growl and grunt. They are very well-known to howl at the moon but they don’t necessarily howl when the moon is full. Howling is used as a form of long-distance communication and they usually howl during hunting or traveling. They are most active at night and that is why the moon might have been associated with these beautiful animals. Wolves don’t often bark but when they do, it is low-in-tone and short.
Dreams are known to have meaning. It has been said that seeing a Wolf in a dream is a clear message that you have taken a position as an Alpha Male or Alpha Female, either at home or at work. Others look for you for guidance and you have the ability to thrive in the toughest situations.
