Granite is known as a very expensive material, and this leads some people to think that they can’t afford it. Granite has some exceptional qualities, so it is indeed expensive. So you can’t expect bargain basement prices for such quality. But it’s possible to buy granite countertops at prices you can afford. What many don’t realise though is that granite is available in many different grades or tiers. The highest tier granite has the highest price. Likewise, granite of a lower grade is what most people would be able to afford.
If you understand that there are different classifications of granite, you would not dismiss the idea of building granite countertops that you can afford. It is generally true that slab granite is the most expensive. Consequently, granite countertops made of a single slab of granite are the most expensive. The specific cost of the countertop will depend on the beauty and strength of the granite slab. Prefab granite, another type of granite is priced lower than granite slabs. They are smaller than granite slabs and sometimes thinner as well. Granite tiles, another granite type are lower in price than prefab granite. They are much smaller than prefab granite and are also thinner.
Granite remnants are the most affordable of all granite classes. They are actually left-over pieces from granite slab cuttings. Since they have already been paid for by the original buyer, granite fabricators are selling them at bargain prices. They are real granite therefore they still have the same elegance and strength. These pieces are ideal for building smaller countertops. If you can find larger granite remnants, you can even build a good-sized kitchen countertop with them. Just be sure that you strengthen all the joints so that the whole structure will be strong.
There’s also a recent granite innovation that is growing in popularity nowadays. It is called granite composite. They are actually composed of 90% to 95% crushed or powdered granite fused with 5% to 10% polyresin and color pigments. Countertops made of composite granite can even be stronger than those made with natural granite. They are highly non-porous because the density of the countertop surface is consistent throughout the structure. Because it is very dense, bacteria cannot multiply in its surface. Your food preparation will surely be safe from bacterial contamination.
