Copper Iris
The Copper Iris is a gorgeous plant that makes a great addition to any landscape. With its showy copper, red or orange, drooping petals and spreading sepals make up the terminal flower of this otherwise typical iris. The showy, reddish-brown flowers with 6 widely spreading, petal-like parts on a slender stalk taller than sword-like leaves. The flowering stem is up to 3 ft. high. Long, narrow leaves are bright green.
This beautiful southern iris of wet sloughs and swampy woods has distinctly flat-topped flowers compared to other irises. It can be cultivated in moist wildflower gardens. The Iris is a beautiful plant that captures any person’s eye at first glance.
The colors are primarily red, orange and yellow but some can be found in orchid and blue. They are liked for their bloom time which is March, April and May. The Iris does well in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas but can also be found along the coast of Georgia because of the freshwater marshes, stream banks, cypress swamps and wet pastures. The Iris needs to have good moist ground in order to thrive at its best.
If you want your Copper Iris to thrive at its full potential then it needs to have a medium to high water use, which in turn means you need to water it often. They grow well in sun to part shade and they have a low drought tolerance. The Copper Iris also has a good heat tolerant so in the dry hot months of summer you don’t have to worry too much as long as the roots are remaining wet and moist. The Copper Iris likes saturated, rich soils and normally grows in acid soils but can tolerate a soil that has lime in it. The leaves are more likely to persist through winter if it doesn’t get too wet or too dry.
If you have Copper Iris in your yard then don’t be surprised when you see an abundance of hummingbirds and bees because they produce a high nectar level in which the hummingbirds and bees love. You will often see the Copper Iris in the southern states because they are so popular.
The Copper Iris comes in a seed but then when you are ready to separate them you can do so from the roots itself. All native Iris can be grown from seeds.
